What we believe

As Episcopalians, we believe in and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world. We believe that God loves all people regardless of race, gender, or religion.

The Episcopal Church originated from the Church of England, which was influenced by the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Reformation. The Episcopal Church became independent from the Church of England during the American Revolution.

As Episcopalians we believe in many things, including:

  • The Holy Trinity

Episcopalians believe in the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.

  • The Bible

Episcopalians believe that the Bible is the revealed word of God, and that it contains everything needed for salvation. They believe that the Bible should be interpreted within the community of the Church, with guidance from the Holy Spirit, tradition, and reason.

  • The Nicene Creed

The Nicene Creed is a basic statement of Episcopal belief about God. It was adopted by the early church founders in the 300s.

  • Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament that represents a person's initiation into the Church. Episcopalians believe that baptism makes a person a member of Christ's body, the Church, and an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

  • The Holy Eucharist

The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament that represents a person's participation in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  • The Baptismal Covenant

Baptismal Covenant is a pledge made at baptism that includes:

    • Belief in the Holy Trinity

    • Willingness to follow the church's teachings

    • Repentance of sins

    • Seeking and serving Christ in all persons

    • Striving for justice and peace among all people

  • The Nicene Creed

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge on baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
